P&G (Crest & Plastic) Is In The News Again

(POR) Sign the petition to tell Proctor & Gamble (P&G) to remove known cancer-causing chemicals from their personal care and cosmetics products.

P&G, the parent company of the Crest Toothpaste brand, is in the news again but not for what you might think. Instead of the plastic micro-bead issue that plagued them with bad publicity several months ago, it was something even more concerning. This time it’s about the company’s conduct during Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October) in the US. While claiming support for the annual pink ribbon campaign they were heavily advertising and pushing products with known carcinogens. See below for a lengthy list. Many of these products will probably be familiar to you! According to The Story Of Stuff Project – a major advocacy group in the US that produces educational and informative videos like The Story of Cosmetics:

“Meanwhile, the multi-billion dollar company will only donate $100,000 this year to fighting breast cancer. For P&G this is a marketing gimmick – the company has never made a commitment to protecting its customers from the known carcinogens in its own products and has hidden the danger from them. This month, while the spotlight is on breast cancer, we can highlight P&G’s role in contributing to it and other cancers, ensuring that the company makes a real commitment to protecting its customer’s health.”

The rest of the details about P&G’s conduct during Breast Cancer Awareness Month are on the petition page. Bottom line? (1) Stay away from their products if you are pregnant or breast feeding. And beyond that, (2) use them sparingly until you can find more nontoxic alternatives. And just to be safe – hair dying, manicures and pedicures are also not recommended during the two-year period encompassing pregnancy and breast feeding.
