NNM Toothpaste Evaluation

(POR) After our Proctor & Gamble posting (plastic in toothpaste), Não No Meu’s editors performed a small evaluation. We looked at the ingredients from 11 popular toothpaste products from 2014. Here’s what we discovered:

  • 1 product contained triclosan – an anti-microbial agent that is also a known carcinogen. (Colgate Total 12, Clean Mint)
  • 3 products contained polyethylene microbeads that serve no purpose but to add color. These beads are also so small that they can be trapped between the teeth and gums during brushing. Young children may also swallow large amounts of the microbeads during brushing.
  • 11 (all of them) contained flavor/fragrance ingredients that are not required to be listed and are therefore unknown with respect to toxicity. New research is showing that many unlisted flavor/fragrance ingredients are moderately to highly toxic.

Demand in the US for less toxic products has already created a new market (a rapidly growing cottage/boutique industry) of simpler, healthier products. This is especially the case with regard to (1) cosmetics, (2) personal care products and (3) cleaning agents. Below is an example of a nontoxic toothpaste (name: “Honest Toothpaste”). Every ingredient has a hazard rating of 3 or less. And it is proof that nontoxic toothpaste isn’t just possible, but already available… in the USA at least.

  • Hazard rating of 0 = low hazard
  • Hazard rating of 6 = moderate hazard
  • Hazard rating of 10 = high hazard
  • All hazard information was taken from the EWG’s Cosmetics Safety Database.

Finally – the ingredients for all 11 products were submitted to EWG’s Cosmetics Safety Database to determine the overall hazard rating for each product. (1) The values for all 11 products are listed below. (2) Showing only the ingredients with a higher hazard rating (6-10) reveals that almost all products have at least one concerning ingredient. (3) Hazard ratings for all of the individual ingredients are also listed for the 11 products.
